The Satellite Sensors project is co-financed by the Regione Toscana within the POR FESR 2014-2020 Proposal for “Helping SMEs to acquire innovative services”.

Diverse studies based on Government figures, as well as information from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and university studies at international level, confirm that a large number of diseases are directly linked to a prolonged and  unwitting exposure to pollutants which are present in homes and / or workplaces. These findings created the Nuvap philosophy: “know your environment, eliminate threats and live with greater security and serenity “ 

The Satellite Sensors project is based on an international patent owned by NUVAP, which is“ A device and method for dynamically measuring an environmental quality factor”, registered on  05/03/2013, pertaining to a “black box” device, NUVAP N1, designed to monitor the main sources of indoor pollution, which includes multiple sensors (SD11-Snm) and is able to measure local environmental parameters via a remote source of data (INFO) that can be associated with the environmental quality factors of your home.  The system is made up of specific control sensors (CX) for the current conditions of the monitored domestic environment and includes a programmable electronic processing unit for analyzing the current state of the environmental health quality factors and the remote data associated with the quality parameters and local environmental conditions, using an adaptive algorithm. Therefore the Satellite Sensors device was created in order to develop an evolved version of the patented product, rationalizing, integrating, diversifying and optimizing the functions of a system for the different types of pollution, which gathers the information from the devices which are distributed in a widespread way and connected to its Cloud platform.

The aim of the project

The principal aim of the project, which was completed in May 2017, was the creation of an electronic device (satellite), composed of a card which integrates advanced indoor environmental monitoring functions, and also contains mechanical components, via sensors and radio modules, that can measure and then transmit these measurements to the central black box. The data transmitted allows you to have detailed information regarding the various forms and areas of pollution (electromagnetic, radon, radioactive, air and water quality, etc).

The device is able to monitor carbon monoxide, fine dust, methane, air quality, NOx, and SOx, electromagnetic pollution, wifi pollution, radon gas, radioactivity, noise pollution, water pollution (Nitrates, Nitrite, Sulfates, Chlorine, etc), temperature, humidity and presence of fire

The satellite sensors and related services can be sold either directly or via e-commerce to the following categories of users.

  • Individuals who want to monitor their home and workplace.
  • Insurance companies that want to expand their commercial range of offers with an innovative product offering new types of insurance, customer loyalty schemes or promotions.

The user can access information in three different ways.

  • Interacting directly with the device;
  • Via Mobile App
  • Via web platform

 

Specifications of the NUMEQS components

The system is composed of:

Hardware: An innovative black box satellite device, which integrates different sensors, determining a measurement method based on data received from heterogeneous sources. The satellite device has been designed to be multi-source and capable of evaluating indoor conditions and sending the resulting data to a remote black box.

Software: The NUVAP mobile APP and Cloud platform for the real-time management of information from the satellite are able to analyze the threats encountered from indoor pollution. The data processing capacity is much higher and more complex because the sensors integrated within the platform architecture, greatly increase the flow of information.

Technological Innovation and integration.

The project’s development will ensure the completeness of Nuvap’s range of products and services through “satellite” systems. The product therefore has a high degree of innovation, as it represents an extension to an existing international patent, rationalizing, integrating, diversifying and optimizing its functions.

  • In particular, the innovation objectives concern:
  • integration of “Connected Home” features that guarantee precise indications both on the origin of the eventual pollution and on the alarm situation.
  • processing of data according to the historical memory and specific data available in real time
  • reduction of the incidence of false security alarms: immediate detection and warning to the user of situations that may indicate danger
  • automatic installation of complementary modules connected to the main module to guarantee the capillarity of the security system
  • guarantee of privacy by implementing encryption algorithms
  • an intelligent cloud system, but also a service, which can improve over time thanks to its powerful detection and interpretation of significant data

 

Results achieved with the project

The Satellite Sensors project has contributed to an increase in Nuvap’s skills in this sector, allowing the company to have a more extensive and detailed knowledge of the target market and a greater ability to propose  innovative products within it.

The development of external sensor and satellite systems has enabled Nuvap to expand the range of its products, making the most of its patented know-how and diversifying its target market with more versatile and low-cost services.

The defined marketing strategy has been directed to the parallel development of two markets and reference areas: e-commerce and direct sales. In particular, the e-commerce site is targeted to a private and global public, while the second area refers to a B2B market, initially localized in Italy.

The sales estimate for this first year of testing and product launch, is of about 10,000 units with the aim of achieving roughly a 5% increase in the local market and from 0.5 to 1% in the global market. This estimate is calculated based on the average life cycle trend of a technological product.
