WE KNOW ABOUT ELECTROMAGNETISM

NIR, Non Ionizing Radiation, has always existed on our planet. NIR is caused by emissions from electric fields, the sun magnetic and electromagnetic fields, our atmosphere and the Earth itself.
Technological development with the use of electricity has introduced equipment and facilities related to human activities that, when working, can produce electromagnetic fields whose intensity depend on their technical and operating features.

The main technological sources of High Frequency electromagnetic fields in external environments are telecommunications, radio and television sets.

Radio base stations (RBS) for mobile phones broadcast signals in limited areas and have limited power: widespread distribution in urbanized area is necessary to allow grater mobile coverage on the territory. Radio television installations instead spread their signal on larger areas and have higher emissive power.

Among Extremely Low Frequency sources (ELF) in the environment there are electroducts – which group power lines, substations and transformer stations, used for transporting and distributing electricity – and appliances powered by electricity (household appliances and video terminals). For power lines, the higher the voltage and the current flowing, the greater the magnitude of the magnetic field produced, and then present in the surroundings.

SOLUTION

If you encounter a source of electromagnetism in your home (or at work) that does not comply with regulations or is greater than 3.4 V/m, possible solutions are:

  • Determine, if possible, the source of pollution with Nuvap N1 (punctual measurement mode) and remove it from the places where you spend most of your time. For example, if the cause is a lamp or a radio system, try to move it away from the bed area in order to minimize exposure to electromagnetic waves.
  • Move your bed or desk in the most healthy and pristine area of your home in order to limit getting emissions; you can easily identify those areas (through N1 punctual measurement mode).
  • Always turn off your Wi-Fi router when you do not use it and always when you are resting. Suggest it also to your neighbors in order to minimize continuous exposure.

If it is impossible to locate an uncontaminated area in your house and/or work environment because of a faulty emission, you’ll want to contact an expert in order to identify the source of pollution, and require it to be in accordance with the law. We KNOW ABOUT RADON GAS

Radon (Rn) is an inert radioactive gas present in nature. It is odorless and colorless and is located in highly variable quantities throughout the Earth’s crust. Although it is not perceived by our senses, Radon can be detected with measuring instruments. Radon and its decay products are considered among the main indoor air pollutants, classified as group 1 carcinogens (agents of ascertained carcinogenicity to humans) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Exposure to Radon is considered by the World Health Organization the second leading cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoking and 5 to 20% of all cases are attributed to it (from 1,500 to 5,500 estimated every year in Italy alone).

It tends to accumulate in confined environments (indoor environments), which in some cases can reach concentrations that pose a significant risk to the health of the exposed population.

The buildings most at risk are those built on volcanic soils or highly permeable made of materials such as tuff, pozzolan, granites.

The Radon level reached in buildings depends on numerous factors, including the type of building and the amount of air change, which in turn depends on the degree of natural or artificial ventilation.

SOLUTION

HOW CAN I REDUCE RADON LEVELS?

The type of actions depend on the level of Radon in the building, the type and age of the building, compatibility with regulations and building restrictions and with safety standards. Costs vary according to the type of intervention, but they are generally sustainable with regard to individual units.

It is therefore possible to protect yourself from Radon in most cases, very often by implementing simple actions at a low cost. Here are some tips:

  1. Increasing the ventilation in the environment dilutes the presence of Radon. The fundamental problem that involves this system is linked to the necessity of recovering heat in the winter months.
  2. Sealing all possible routes of Radon entry through specialized companies. Such sealing may be partial, i.e. crannies, floor-wall junctions, service passages (hydraulic, thermal, utilities, …), or total, that is, on the whole surface in contact with the ground. Polymeric materials are used for partial sealing and sheets of Radon proof materials for total sealing.
  3. Soil relieving, a special technique for high concentration of indoor Radon coming from the ground. A low space (sump) that collects Radon gas must be built under the surface of the building. This “hollow space” is connected to a fan able to create a depression, thanks to which Radon is collected and is pushed directly in the air outside, preventing the entrance in the building.
  4. Pressurizing the building – with the aid of fans, so as to reduce its characteristic depression, thus counteracting the rise of Radon from the ground. In practice, it is as if the indoor air pushed out Radon from the building.
  5. Increasing ventilation of the crawlspace: if the building is equipped with a crawlspace, increasing ventilation can dilute the Radon, thereby reducing its transfer into the building. The increase in ventilation can be accomplished through the increase in the number of air vents or through the use of a fan.

WE KNOW ABOUT RADIOACTIVITY

Radioactivity, also known as radioactive decay,  is a set of nuclear-physical processes by which some unstable or radioactive atomic nucleus (radionuclide) decay (transmute), in a certain period of time called decay time, in nucleus of lower energy reaching a state of greater stability with emission of ionizing radiation according to the principles of mass/energy conservation and the amount of movement.

SOLUTION

In the event that Nuvap N1 signals the presence of radioactivity we recommend to:

  1. Contact specialized companies for the installation of specific screening panels in the affected area to contain ionizing radiation coming from radioactivity, if it were possible to accurately determine the source of pollution.
  2. Eliminate if possible the source of radioactive pollution.
  3. Thanks to Nuvap N1, previously choose workplaces or homes without radioactive sources (or other pollutants).

WE KNOW ABOUT WI-FI

The term Wi-Fi, in telecommunications, indicates a type of technology and related equipment that enable user terminals to connect to each other through a wireless local area network (WLAN) based on IEEE Standard 802.11. Each access point is a constant source of electromagnetic fields at 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. Although it is individually very little (100 mW), the presence of many devices (Phones, Access Point, Hot Spot, Corporate Networks) is likely to create an electromagnetic power that is no longer negligible.

SOLUTION

If Nuvap N1 were to report excessive presence of electromagnetism caused by Wi-Fi in the monitored area, we recommend to:

  1. Use your Wi-Fi router when is actually needed and turn it off after use.
  2. Turn off your Wi-Fi router at home before going to sleep. By doing so you will limit exposure to Wi-Fi waves to 7 hours per day.
  3. Raise your neighbor and colleague awareness to follow step 1 and 2 to reduce exposure to external Wi-Fi waves since the presence of more Wi-Fi in most living areas increases exposure intensity.

WE KNOW ABOUT CARBON MONOXIDE

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas. If carbon monoxide is inhaled in large quantities it can reduce the ability to absorb oxygen, resulting in severe tissue damage – often life-threatening. Poisoning caused by carbon monoxide is one of the causes of accidental deaths.

Carbon monoxide is produced by appliances or other devices that produce combustion fumes, such as those that burn gas or other petroleum products, wood or other fuels. Danger occurs when carbon monoxide accumulates in poorly ventilated spaces. Simple precautions can really save lives.

SOLUTION

If Nuvap N1 signals the presence of carbon monoxide, a source of carbon monoxide is present in the monitored area; if Nuvap N1 leds signal the presence of a high amount of carbon monoxide there is a danger to health that could even be life threatening.

In this case you must:

  1. Ventilate the contaminated area immediately by opening doors and windows.
  2. Move away from the area contaminated by carbon monoxide.
  3. At the first signs or symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning (headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, confusion) promptly call for help or go to the emergency room.
  4. After the event specialized technicians should check all the systems that may have caused the presence of carbon monoxide in the area monitored by Nuvap N1 (combustion heaters, ovens, charcoal grills, gas cookers, gas boilers, fireplaces, portable generators, including those often used on houseboats, wood stoves, the engines of cars and trucks).

We KNOW ABOUT METHANE GAS

Methane is a fossil fuel that belongs to the hydrocarbons family, chemical compounds consisting of carbon and hydrogen. At room temperature and pressure, methane comes as colorless, odorless and highly flammable gas. It is the one commonly used in kitchens to feed the flame of gas stoves and to heat up the house.

In confined environments (for example in a room) when this gas mixes up with air and in the presence of a primer (a flame or a spark caused by turning on the light) it is ignited causing dangerous explosions.

It is not toxic by inhalation or by contact and, being lighter than air, in case of leakage it disperses quickly upwards.

It is a good habit to air rooms where devices that use natural gas are placed. Methane gas inside tanks or inside pipes cannot catch fire because oxygen is not present, but it becomes flammable during its output phase when it mixes with air.

SOLUTION

Since methane is a flammable gas, if a strong presence of methane gas is detected in the monitored area we recommend:

  • Do not turn on any type of flame (matches, lighters), and do not operate anything that can produce sparks, such as electrical switches, door bells or telephones.
  • Immediately open doors and windows to let air in and gas out.
  • If possible, close the gas valve on the meter or tank.
  • Go back inside the house only when you are sure you do not smell gas anymore.
  • If a strong smell of gas is coming from your neighbor’s house, do not hesitate to alert the fire department.
  • After the event you should urgently contact qualified technicians to repair any methane leakage because there is a risk of fire or explosion in the event of new saturation of methane gas occurs in the confined environment.

It is crucial to perform maintenance and periodic inspections of all appliances and devices that use natural gas according to the instructions of the manufacturers.

WE KNOW ABOUT PARTICULATE MATTER

Particulates, known as PM10 (diameter less than 10 µm) but also PM2.5, are polluting particles present in the air we breathe. These small particles may be of organic or inorganic nature and present in a solid or liquid state. The particles are able to absorb on their surface different substances with toxic properties such as sulphates, nitrates, metals and volatile compounds. The main sources of particulate matter are:

  • natural sources
  • forest fires
  • volcanic activity
  • dust, earth and sea salt raised by the wind (the so-called marine aerosols)
  • pollen and spores
  • rocks erosion
  • anthropogenic sources
  • vehicular traffic, both diesel and petrol vehicles
  • use of solid fuels for domestic heating (coal, wood and fuel oil)
  • residues of road surface wear, vehicle brakes and tires
  • industrial activity

Fine particles can be inhaled and penetrate the upper respiratory tract, from the nose to the larynx. Epidemiological studies, also confirmed by clinical and toxicological analysis, have shown that air pollution has a significant impact on health; the higher is the concentration of particulate matter in the air, in fact, the greater is the effect on people’s health. Acute effects are linked to a short-term exposure (one to two days) to high concentrations of particulates containing metals. This condition can cause inflammation of the respiratory tract, such as asthma attacks, or impair the functioning of the cardiovascular system. Chronic effects depend, instead, on prolonged exposure to high concentrations of particulates and can cause respiratory symptoms such as cough and phlegm, decreased lung capacity and chronic bronchitis. For sensitive individuals, that is, people already suffering from heart or lung disease or asthma, it is reasonable to fear a worsening of the condition and an outbreak of the typical symptoms of the disorder.

SOLUTION

NUVAP N1 SIGNALS THE PRESENCE OF PARTICULATE MATTER: WHAT SHOULD I DO?

The presence of particulates in the home is normal, considering that university research shows that the presence of this indoor pollution is on average even 5 times greater than outside.

If particulate matter is found indoor, it is a good idea to:

  1. Ventilate the room regularly by opening windows (paying attention to heat loss in cold weather).
  2. Clean rooms with a vacuum cleaner with greater frequency; Vacuum cleaning robots are useful and effective too.
  3. If possible, avoid or limit the use of rugs, carpets and fabric sofas which hold dust and mites more easily.
  4. In the rooms where you spend more time (like the bedroom) it can be helpful to use a portable air purifier (not neglecting maintenance and cleaning filters regularly).
  5. Avoid the use of printers in the bedrooms and place them in aerating places. Toner powder from printers/copy machines are only some of the causes that could give rise to health risks in the family.

WE KNOW ABOUT WATER POLLUTION

Water is a basic need for human life. Nevertheless it can harm our health if not properly checked during its way into our homes.

Water may be affected by the increasing contamination of soil, caused by urban and industrial discharges, acid rain, pesticides and fertilizers, which cause a more or less ubiquitous presence of many chemicals, toxic species. In recent years, only by way of example, there have been several cases of groundwater pollution related to the use of chemical products in agriculture.

SOLUTION

If you find out that tap water in your house is contaminated the first simple solutions are:

  • Avoid drinking tap water.
  • Cook with bottled water or water whose purity has been verified (e.g. spring water that is periodically checked).
  • Do not allow water to come in contact with food (for example fruit and vegetables must be washed with bottled water).
  • If you still want to use tap water, install a filtering system specific for the pollutant you found.

WE KNOW ABOUT NOISE POLLUTION

Noise pollution is caused by excessive exposure to high intensity sounds and noise. This can happen in cities and in natural environments. A definition of noise pollution or noise disturbance is ” the disturbing or excessive noise that may harm the activity or balance of human or animal life, thus endangering health, causing the deterioration of ecosystems, material goods, monuments, indoor and outdoor environments, or interfering with the regular functions of the environments themselves”. Sources of noise pollution may be factories, construction sites, airports, highways, motor racing circuits, etc.

Over time, noise pollution can cause psychological problems, high blood pressure and stress to people who you are constantly subjected to it.

SOLUTION

Should Nuvap N1 find an excessive level of noise over time in the monitored area, we recommend that you:

  1. Try to understand the origin of the noise and, if possible, make sure that is suspended or mitigated within a safety threshold (use Nuvap N1 in punctual measurement mode for verification).
  2. If it was impossible to mitigate the source of noise within an acceptable level as produced outside the area you want to clean up, use earplugs as long as possible, especially when you sleep, in order to minimize exposure the background noise. If the source of the pollution is outside your house, we recommend the installation of anti-noise glass windows and fixtures.

WE KNOW ABOUT HUMIDITY

Atmospheric moisture means the quantity of water vapor contained in the air and which comes from the evaporation of the water from the land surface by the action of solar radiation and also, in small amounts, transpiration from plants. Water vapor has a very important role in the atmosphere, because its condensation forms clouds, fog and rainfall. Moisture rate and air quality inside your home are elements that determine comfort and health of the whole family.

SOLUTION

IF NUVAP N1 DETECTS EXCESS MOISTURE WHAT SHOULD I DO?

  1. Reduce humidity level with a dehumidifier which you can buy in specialized stores (prefer models appropriate to the size of the area to be dehumidified).
  2. Air up your house every morning for at least 10 minutes.
  3. Avoid water stagnation in saucers of indoor plants.
  4. Use the vent when cooking food.
  5. Install a fan in the bathroom.
  6. Do not over-dry laundry in the house, especially at night when windows are not open.
  7. If possible, arrange for drainage work with a specialized company.

PARTICULATE
In the atmosphere there is particulate and particles from the soil, like dust raised by the wind, volcanic eruptions, and caused by air pollution. Dust in homes and offices consists of plant pollen, human and animal hair and dander, textile fibers, paper fibers, minerals, epithelial cells, combustion residues and many other materials. People with heart or lung conditions and other chronic diseases are at greater risk of particulate pollution.
WI-FI
Internet wireless routers emit harmful electromagnetic fields in order to send their signals to PCs and phones through walls. If we use a WiFi modem in our home or office we are exposed to significant electromagnetic fields. Without knowing it, we live immersed in a network of dangerous radiation 24 hours a day.
RADON GAS
Radon (Rn) is a natural, colorless and tasteless, radioactive gas, characterized by large chemical inertia through which it spreads rapidly in the environment. It is very dangerous to health because of its intense radioactivity. Radon typically emanates from the soil and can spread into the air of our homes through openings or microfractures in foundations. Radon is a carcinogen and is the second leading cause of death from lung cancer after cigarette smoking. It is estimated that its presence in indoor environments causes about 50 thousand deaths each year worldwide, more than 1,000 in Italy alone.
CARBON MONOXIDE
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas and is considered a very insidious pollutant, especially in confined areas where it can accumulate in toxic and lethal concentrations (above 35 ppm). The urban population is often subject to long-term exposure to low concentrations. The slow poisoning from carbon monoxide causes respiratory and nervous symptoms and involves the aggravation of cardiovascular illnesses and a worsening of the health status in healthy people.
WATER POLLUTION
Water pollution is caused by several different factors, such as pollutants from industrial and agricultural activities and normal human activities that are discharged into rivers, lakes and seas. This form of environmental pollution affects the whole biosphere and is a serious danger to human health.
ELECTROMAGNETIC POLLUTION
At home or at work, we are constantly exposed to electromagnetic fields: household appliances and industrial equipment, telecommunications and broadcasting radiate low and high frequency waves. While exposures to high levels of electromagnetic radiation produce immediately visible damage (such as burns or electric shock), the effects on our health caused by chronic exposure to electromagnetic fields of low intensity cannot be apparent for months or even years .
